Stanford Cardinal and Cal Golden Bears Headline Week 9 Matchup
Top-25 Matchup in Northern California
Coming off of a bye week, the No. 14 Stanford Cardinal will travel to Berkeley to take on the California Golden Bears in a Pac-12 North showdown this weekend. Stanford enters the contest with a 6-1 record and a 3-1 mark in conference play, while Cal is 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the Pac-12.
The Cardinal have won the last eight meetings between the two schools, including a 41-11 victory last season in Stanford Stadium. Stanford has also won eight of the last nine contests in Berkeley.
Justin Wilcox Led Cal Looking to Upset Cardinal
Cal will be looking to snap that skid against its rival this weekend. The Golden Bears are coming off of a 28-9 loss at Oregon State, a game in which they were held to just 217 yards of total offense.
Despite the loss, Cal head coach Justin Wilcox is confident that his team can compete with Stanford. "We know that Stanford is a great team," Wilcox said. "They're well-coached and they have a lot of talented players. But we're confident that we can go out there and play with them."
Cardinal Aiming for Statement Win
Stanford, meanwhile, is looking to make a statement with a win over Cal. The Cardinal are currently ranked No. 14 in the College Football Playoff rankings, and a win over their rival would only help their chances of making the playoff.
"We know that Cal is a good team," Stanford head coach David Shaw said. "They're well-coached and they have some really good players. But we're confident that we can go out there and play our game and get a win."
