Steele Returns, But Cubs Fall to A's, Eliminated From Playoff Contention
Chicago Cubs Lose to Oakland Athletics, Playoff Hopes Dwindle
The Chicago Cubs' playoff hopes took a major blow on Wednesday night as they fell to the Oakland Athletics 5-3 at Wrigley Field.
Despite the return of starting pitcher Kyle Steele, the Cubs were unable to overcome a strong performance by A's starter Paul Blackburn.
Blackburn Dominates Cubs Lineup
Blackburn allowed just one run on four hits over six innings, striking out seven Cubs batters.
The A's offense provided Blackburn with plenty of support, scoring three runs in the first inning off Steele.
The Cubs managed to tie the game in the third inning on an RBI double by Patrick Wisdom, but the A's regained the lead in the fourth on a solo home run by Shea Langeliers.
Cubs' Playoff Hopes Fade
The loss dropped the Cubs to 63-75 on the season, 10 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers for the final NL Wild Card spot.
With just 10 games remaining in the regular season, the Cubs' playoff hopes are all but mathematically eliminated.
It marks the second straight season the Cubs have failed to reach the postseason.
Steele's Return Provides Glimmer of Hope
Despite the disappointing loss, the return of Steele provided a glimmer of hope for the Cubs.
The right-hander, who missed the past two months with a hamstring injury, allowed three runs on five hits over four innings.
Steele's outing was a positive sign for the Cubs, who are hoping he can provide a boost to their rotation down the stretch.
